The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied.

The course of 2017 Moves In! Bike racks are all occupied. Lines are a bit that is little again to get food. Publications are being bought. Tools are put away and summer construction has dwindled down (well, the majority of it). Automobiles filled up with boxes of clothes and school supplies are being directed around campus to halls that are residential. Moving carts, student ID cards, and eleventh hour trips to Target; folks, it’s officially Move-In Day.
I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Sometimes I forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future leaders that are global. We found myself simply taking it all in while smiling at pupils and parents I have never met before. ( It might have already been only a little weird, but hey, I became caught in a moment). Suddenly, I desired to travel back in its history, get back again to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday early morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as these people were entering their dorms for the time that is first. Subsequently, I sensed an amount that is great of and a bit of hesitation from moms and dads as they struggled to allow their young ones go. It is obvious that this brief moment is a milestone in every of the lives. Students look ahead to their next four years at USC and wonder at most of the opportunities it could bring, while parents feel a sense of success simply because they were somewhat responsible to get their kids to college. With all of these feelings swirling on campus, i will understand why there have been therefore hugs that are many around.
During the welcome convocation today, speakers endured in front side regarding the incoming course of 2017 and offered advice on how to take advantage of their time only at USC. I would like to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife College, stated during her message: be there. It’s not casinopokies777.com as easy as it appears you is a better individual being the sooner it is possible to exercise it in your very own life. To the incoming that is new at USC and current students; I challenge you to be present. Be present in your classes. Be there in your conversations. Be present as you research your options. Be present once you’re meeting people that are new. Be present when you write your statements that are personal. Be present when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when the tests are taken by you. Be present whenever you ask her/him out. Be contained in conflict. Be contained in new challenges. Be present in all of your new experiences and activities. Take it all in. Be current!

Hey Parents! Listen Up!

Parents play an important role in the entire college procedure. Often times, moms and dads help subsidize some, if not all, of attending an university, and they are always here to inquire of those specific ‘parent’ questions you need to ask the tour guide when the last meningitis outbreak was? that you as students can’t be bothered with (really mom, did)

But, there are instances where moms and dads must have a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to ask the hard questions. Here, we now have a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting throughout the college search and application process:

Do help your son or child understand what they want for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. locating a good fit for your certain wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.

do not gather all the information for them! Allow them to make contact with admission counselors to see the information that is relevant themselves. After all, they’ll be in college somewhere soon enough, and it is important they learn to navigate the process themselves.

Do encourage your sons and daughters to go to college campuses, and include them on those tours! The way that is best to get acquainted with a college or university would be to result in the stop by at campus.

Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus tours, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them do it! This shows us that they are mature and independent.

Do remind your sons and daughters that not getting directly into their first option school might appear such as the end of this world at that moment, but that things work out and as they work hard that they will be successful wherever they go as long. And, encourage them to transfer if that organization remains towards the top of these list even after enrolling somewhere else.

Don’t fill their applications out for them! We could inform plus it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are young adults using and expect their applications to share their true voice and style.

So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is about to attempt a life-changing journey and that beginning to just take ownership of the college application procedure is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ concerns, even if they involve where you should send the care package.
